It’s been a long time. Ten years. That’s ten years since Meteor Ford closed suddenly, leaving us with empty buildings, then an empty plot. Back in 2006 you could pop down the road and buy a car, or get your ancient existing motor repaired or fill up your tank.
Since then the wrangling and the false starts have been many and various. Residents incandescent with rage at the idea of an undesirable supermarket, councils overriding the view of the locals, supermarkets chopping and changing. Talking of chopping, let’s not forget the day the residents formed a human chain to stop the ancient horse chestnut on the site from being chain-sawed down by the developers.
But that’s in the past. On Monday morning Marks and Spencer are arriving. They’re building us a brand new Simply Food store. When it’s finished I ‘ll be joining the queue for a litre of milk and a packet of vegetarian Percy Pig sweets. Bring it on.
